As we stay put in our homes during these cold months, our furnace works hard to keep us warm. But sometimes it needs a little TLC, especially the blower motor…
What is the blower motor, you might ask? That’s the part that actually blows/circulates warm air throughout your home. If yours seems like it needs some fixing or even full-on replacement, don’t worry! We can help you figure it out.
Signs that your blower motor needs attention include strange noises coming from the furnace, weak airflow in your home, the furnace overheating and shutting off prematurely, and higher energy bills. But you may not be able to diagnose the problem yourself, and that’s where we come in, and may talk to you about repairing or replacing the motor, and what might be the best choice in your unique situation.
To repair or to replace? That is the question
Now, it’s decision time. Do we repair or replace the blower motor?
A blower motor doesn’t always need to be shown the door at the first sign of trouble. In fact, we can fix many issues with blower motors pretty easily. Worn-out bearings, fan blades, or electrical hiccups that don’t require a lot of rewiring are all fixable.
Now, we know what you’re thinking. “If it can be repaired, why replace it?” Well, it’s not always clear-cut. If your blower motor is severely damaged or the repair costs start to creep up towards the price of a new motor, it’s of course better to upgrade it.
For example, when diagnosing the motor, we also test its electrical resistance, which can reveal issues like short circuits. If resistance is too high, low, or zero, repairs will likely be ineffective and motor replacement is the better solution. But if resistance measurements are within the normal range, the motor may just need to be cleaned and lubricated to get back to proper functioning.
