Keeping Your Cool: How to Test Your A/C’s Efficiency!

How can you tell if your A/C unit is efficient? Grab your favorite detective hat, and let’s start our investigation!

Step 1: The preparation

Before diving into the numbers, we must prepare ourselves for the task ahead. First, ensure your A/C has been running for at least 15 minutes. This will give it enough time to reach its peak performance.

Step 2: Measuring supply and return temperatures

Now that your A/C is running, measuring the temperature at the supply and returning vents is time. To do this, you’ll need a digital thermometer.

Once you have your thermometer, place it in the supply vent (the one that blows out the cool air) and note the temperature. This is your return temperature (ST). Next, measure the temperature at the return vent (the one that sucks in the air) and note it down. This is your return temperature (RT).

Now that we have our ST and RT, it’s time for some good old-fashioned math (don’t worry, it’s elementary). Subtract the ST from the RT to find the temperature difference.

Step 3: The ideal range for an efficient A/C

Your A/C is as efficient as a well-oiled, air-cooled machine. We know a thing or two about the heat in the great state of Texas. So, it should be no surprise that the ideal temperature difference for A/C systems in our neck of the woods falls between 16-20° if yours is within this range; congratulations! If not, it might be time to call the experts at Air Repair Pros to look.

Here’s a quick example to help you visualize the process:

Return temperature: 75°F

Supply temperature: 55°F

20°F difference – ideal!

And that’s it! You’ve successfully tested your A/C’s efficiency with style. If you ever need A/C repair or maintenance, remember to call Air Repair Pros in Frisco, Texas. We’ll keep you cool and calm through the upcoming Texas heat.
